An old story. A
woman we thought we knew so well, or didn't really know at all.
An ear from heaven tipped toward earth
as each sound at day’s end told a story. The ferocious growls and
pained squeals of dogs tore the silence with jagged teeth. Shouts
laced with new wine came from men who crowded together instead of
finding a place to rest.
When Lara Shaunnassey
Vega was four years old, an unknown gunman murdered her father, an
immigrant from Mexico, in front of her childhood home. Her mother
supported her young daughter by becoming a stripper, until a
betrayal drove Shaun away. With help, Shaun rejected the lure of
drugs, alcohol and the streets to pursue a career as a police
officer and then a detective. But her past is never really past, and
she frequently encounters echoes of it in the cases that come her
way.
"A dark
haze cloaked the mirrored and chrome buildings of downtown, visible
in the distance as Miguel Antonio Avila trudged along the busy
four-lane road at dusk. Like spent breath from a smoker’s lungs, the
thick air pressed in on his lean body as he walked, felt heavy as he
drew it in." (Tattooed Everything)
