In the Village Na Crainn, magic is
everyday life—from cook-quickly ovens to play-themselves guitars.
The headmistresses of the school in Na Crainn strongly discourage
their students from learning how plants grow, how clouds
form, or how anything works. To discover these things for
themselves, Lyric Doherty and her friends Fin and Andrew set off for
the Arbor Fair, a secretive place where vendors trade forbidden
books and chemistry sets for blinks of the eye and songs sung in
four-part harmony. There they meet the “pirate and renegade” Caitlin
O’Malley who tells Lyric, “You’re part fairy, aren’t you?” This
revelation starts the 12-year-old on a quest to find her mother and
to discover why she left Lyric when Lyric was very small.
